Outline

  • Genesis 1 – Creation: God brings order and creates humanity
  • Genesis 2 – Design: Purpose, work, relationships, marriage
  • Genesis 3 – The Fall: Temptation, sin, separation, promise of redemption

Verse Notes

  • 1:1-2 The Beginning
    Genesis literally means origin/beginning
God creates everything – but the earth starts formless and empty, darkness is over everything, and God’s spirit is hovering (protective/present).
God didn’t create chaos as “bad” – He created a space to bring order into.
  • 1:3-5 Light
God creates light before the sun.
Light before the sun – HE IS the source of ALL light.
God isn’t dependent on creation – Creation depends on Him.
  • 1:6-13 Separation + Structure
    God separates waters, sky, land
Expanse (firmament) like a greenhouse – longer lives, bigger people
“Waters above the expanse” → Maybe what opened on Noah during the flood?
  • 1:11-12 Sustainability
Creation is designed with ongoing provision.
  • 1:14-19 Sun, Moon, Stars
Not created for horoscopes, but for signs, seasons and time.
They were created for function – not control over human fate.
  • 1:20-25 Creatures
After their kind = design, not random, a dog will never be a cat.
“large sea creatures” → people feared them.
  • 1:26-27 Image of God
We were made in Gods image
    “Our image” = Trinity God
    Dominion = stewardship, not control
Humans reflect God in intellect, will, and love.
  • 1:28-31 Blessing + Provision
Gods command to us and a blessing to us.
Be fruitful – fruit of the spirit
    Vegetables are for food.
Very good = Complete and functioning as intended.
  • 2:1-3 Sabbath
God models rest and worship – not exhaustion/burnout
Take time to rest, appreciate and enjoy everything.
  • 2:4-6 Environment
Water came UP from the ground – different pre-flood environment.
  • 2:7 Adam
    Dust = Humility
    Breath of life = soul
    Body + Soul (CCC 362)
  • 2:8-14 Garden
    Eden = Delight
Tree of life = live forever
    Tree of knowledge = Choice
Free will = Love = Boundaries
  • 2:15-17 Boundary
    Boundaries arent bad, theyre protection.
    Work existed before sin.
  • 2:18-20 Not alone
  • Yahweh – personal relationship with God
First time we hear “not good”.
Dominion = Naming of the animals
  • 2:21-23 Woman
    First “surgery”
    Notice how it says “crafted/built”
Equal partner = from the side, Equal dignity, complementary roles.
  • 2:24-25 Marriage
    Marriage = Gift from God
    Humans were made for relationship
    Naked = Innocent
  • 3:1-5 Temptation
The serpent is described as subtle, cunning and crafty.
He doesn’t attack directly – he starts by questioning: “Did God really say…?”
Sin starts with doubt, not rebellion. He twists Gods words just enough to make Eve question “Is God holding something back?”
Eve adds to Gods commands: “You must not eat or touch it.”
God didnt say that though, so maybe Adam didn’t communicate it clearly, or the command became distorted?
Then the serpent outright lies: You will not die. He makes disobedience look like growth.
  • 3:6-7 The Fall
Eve sees that the fruit is:
    -Good for food
    -Pleasing to the eye
    -Desirable for wisdom
    This matches
    -Lust of the flesh
    -Lust of the eyes
    -Pride
She eats – and gives it to Adam. He eats.
Adam is with her (he originally got the command from God) and he says nothing? He doesn’t stop her? Adam listened to her and not God. (This is why scripture later points to Adam as responsible). He is supposed to lead.
They immediately feel exposed – sin doesn’t just break rules – it breaks innocence and trust. So they hide themselves.
  • 3:8-13 Hiding and blame
They hear God and hide from Him, but He asks “Where are you?”
He knew already, but His questions are an invitation to confession.
Instead Adam blames Eve, and Eve blames the serpent (very much like today).
  • 3:14-19 The consequences
God speaks to each one of them.
    – The Serpent: Cursed, Brought low (defeat + humiliation).
    – The woman: Pain in childbirth, relational tension.
    – The man: The ground is cursed because of him, work becomes hard.
Death – “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” not living forever with God anymore.
  • 3:15 The first hint at the Gospel
“He will strike your head…” The beginning of salvation.
    The woman → Mary
    The offspring → Jesus
  • 3:20-24 Mercy
    God makes garments for them.
He showed mercy and still clothed them.
There was bloodshed required for sin (animal killed).
This points us forward to sacrifice and restoration.
Then… God removes them from the garden. It seems like punishment – but also mercy. If they were to eat from the Tree of Life in this fallen state, they would live forever- separated from God.
So God blocks access. This shows that boundaries are still in place – even after sin.

Conclusion

This catholic Genesis 1-3 study shows the full beginning of the human story.
But the story doesnt end with failure. Even after sin:
-God seeks them out
-He calls them to respond
-He covers their shame
-God promises a future victory over evil.

Reflection

Think about this:
-Where is my life out of order right now? (Genesis 1)
-Where am I ignoring Gods design or boundaries? (Genesis 2)
-Where am i doubting God, hiding or avoiding responsibility? (Genesis 3)

And even deeper:
-Am I trusting what God has said – or what feels right in the moment?
-Am I letting small doubts grow into bigger issues?
